9 Astonishing Facts in the Quran that will Surprise You

Ever since the dawn of mankind, we have sought to understand nature and our place in it.

In this quest for the purpose of life many people have turned to religion. Most religions are based on books claimed by their followers to be divinely inspired, without any proof. Islam is different because it is based upon reason and proof.

There are clear signs that the book of Islam, the Quran, is the word of God and we have many reasons to support this claim:

· There are scientific and historical facts found in the Quran which were unknown to the people at the time, and have only been discovered recently by contemporary science.

· The Quran is in a unique style of language that cannot be replicated, this is known as the ‘Inimitability of the Quran.’

· There are prophecies made in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which have come to be pass.

The following are some facts found in the Quran:

1.  Origin of Life

Water is essential for all living things. We all know that water is vital to life but the Quran makes a very unusual claim:

{We made every living thing from water. Will they not believe?} (Quran 21:30)

In this verse water is pointed out as the origin of all life.  All living things are made of cells.  We now know that cells are mostly made up of water[1].  For example, 80% of the cytoplasm (basic cell material) of a standard animal cell is described as water in biology textbooks.

The fact that living things consist mostly of water was discovered only after the invention of the microscope.  In the deserts of Arabia, the last thing someone would have guessed is that all life came from water.

2.  Iron

Iron is not natural to the earth.  It did not form on the earth but came down to earth from outer space.  This may sound strange but it’s true.  Scientists have found that billions of years ago the earth was stuck by meteorites.  These meteorites were carrying Iron from distant stars which had exploded.[2]

The Quran says the following on the origin of Iron:

{We sent down Iron with its great inherent strength and its many benefits for humankind.} (Quran 57:25)

God uses the words ‘sent down’ for Iron.  It is clear from the verse that Iron is not an earthly material, but was sent down for the benefit of humanity.  The fact that Iron came down to earth from outer space is something which could not be known by the primitive science of the 7th century.

3.  Sky’s Protection

sky quranThe sky plays a crucial role in protecting the earth.  The sky protects the earth from the lethal rays of the sun.  If the sky did not exist then the sun’s radiation would have killed off all life on earth.  It also acts like a blanket wrapped around the earth, to protect it from the freezing cold of space.

The temperature just above the sky is approximately -270oC.  If this temperature was to reach earth then the planet would freeze over instantly.  The sky also protects life on earth by warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night[3].  These are some of the many protective functions of the sky.

The Quran asks us to consider the sky in the following verse:

{We made the sky a protective ceiling.  And yet they are turning away from Our signs!} (Quran 21:32)

The Quran points to the sky’s protection as a sign of God.  The protective properties of the sky were discovered by scientific research conducted in the 20th century.

4.  Mountains

The Quran draws our attention to a very important characteristic of mountains:

{Did We not make the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes?} (Quran 78:6-7)

The Quran indicates that mountains have deep roots by using the word stakes to describe them.  In fact mountains do have deep roots, and the word stakes is an accurate description for them.

A book titled ‘Earth’ by Geophysicist Frank Press explains that mountains are like stakes, and are buried deep under the surface of the earth. Mount Everest (pictured below), the height of which is approximately 9 km above ground, has a root deeper than 125 km.

The fact that mountains have deep ‘stake’ like roots was not known, until after the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the beginning of the 20th century.[6]

5.  Expansion of the Universe

At a time when the science of Astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in Quran:

{And it is We who have built the Universe with [Our creative] power and keep expanding it.} (Quran 51:47)

The fact that the universe is expanding was discovered in the last century.  The physicist Stephen Hawking in his book ‘A Brief History of Time’ writes, “The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.”.[4]

The Quran mentioned the expansion of the universe even before the invention of the telescope!

6.  Sun’s Orbit

In 1512 the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus put forward his theory that the Sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system, and that the planets revolve around it.  The belief that the Sun is stationary was widespread amongst astronomers until the 20th century.  It is now a well-established scientific fact that the Sun is not stationary, but is moving in an orbit around the centre of our Milky Way galaxy[5].

The Quran mentions the orbit of the Sun:

{It is He who created night and day, the Sun and the Moon, each floating in its orbit.} (Quran 21:33)

The Quran would have been wrong according to astronomers just a couple of decades ago.  But we now know that the Quranic account of the Sun’s motion is consistent with modern Astronomy.

7.  The Ocean

The Quran uses imagery to covey its deep meanings, here it describes the state of the unbelievers as:

{Darkness out in a deep ocean which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds, layers of darkness, one upon the other.  When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it.  Those God gives no light to, they have no light.} (Quran 24:40)

It is commonly thought that waves only occur on the surface of the ocean.  However oceanographers have discovered that there are internal waves that take place below the surface of the ocean.  These waves are invisible to the human eye, and can only be detected by specialist equipment[6].

The Quran mentions darkness in a deep ocean above which are waves, above which are waves, then clouds above that.  This description is not only remarkable because it describes the internal waves in the ocean, but also because it describes darkness deep in the ocean.

A human being can dive no more than 70 metres without breathing equipment.  Light is present at that depth, but if we go down 1000 metres it is completely dark[7].  1400 years ago there were no submarines or specialist equipment to discover internal waves or the darkness deep inside the oceans.

8.  Lying and Movement

There was a cruel oppressive tribal leader named Abu Jahl who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). God revealed a verse of the Quran to warn him:

{No Indeed! If he does not stop, We will seize him by the forehead, his lying, sinful forehead.} (Quran 96:15-16)

God does not call this person a liar, but calls his forehead (the front part of the brain) ‘lying’ and ‘sinful’, and warns him to stop.

This verse is significant for two reasons.  The first is that the front part of our brain is responsible for voluntary movement[8]. This is known as the frontal lobe.

The-Truth-is-From-Your-Lord-Surat-al-Baqarah-Quran-2-147-Quran-2-147-A book titled ‘Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology’ which includes the results of research on the functions of this area states: The motivation and the foresight to plan and initiate movements occur in the anterior portion of the frontal lobes, the prefrontal area[9].  The part of the brain that is responsible for movement is said to be seized if the man does not stop.

Secondly, numerous studies have shown that this same region (frontal lobe) is responsible for the lying function of the brain[10].  One such study at the University of Pennsylvania in which volunteers were asked questions during a computerized interrogation, it was found that when the volunteers were lying there was significantly increased activity in the prefrontal and premotor cortices (frontal lobe region)[11].

The front part of the brain is responsible for movement and lying.  The Quran links movement and lying to this area.  These functions of the frontal lobe were discovered with medical imaging equipment which was developed in the 20th century.

9.  Pain Receptors

For a long time it was thought that the sense of feeling and pain was dependent on the brain.  However it has been discovered that there are pain receptors present in the skin[12].  Without these pain receptors, a person would not be able to feel pain.

Consider the following verse on pain:

{We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the (Hell) Fire.  When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is Almighty, All-Wise.} (Quran 4:56)

God tells the people who reject his message that when they are in Hell and their skins are burnt off (so they can’t feel any pain), he will give them new skins so that they continue to feel the pain.

The Quran makes it clear that pain is dependent upon on the skin.  The discovery of pain receptors in the skin is a fairly recent discovery for Biology.

Conclusion

These are just some of the many facts found in the Quran.  It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science, but that it is consistent with science.  To claim that scientific facts in the Quran are due to coincidence would be irrational.  The best explanation is that God revealed this knowledge to the Prophet Muhammad.

Just like the Quran contains knowledge about the natural world, it also contains information about the inner dimensions of our souls.  It relates to our feelings, wants and needs.  The Quran informs us that we have a purpose in life, and that following God’s guidance will lead us to inner peace in this life, and Paradise in the hereafter.  And that rejection of his message will lead to depression in this life and Hellfire after death.

{We shall show them Our signs in the Universe and within themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth.  Is it not enough that your Lord is the witness of all things?} (Quran 41:53)

LOL. Water is a molecule: it is made out of oxygen and hydrogen atoms. This idea that everything is made from water originates from the ancient Greek philosopher Thales. Well and truly debunked now: even electrons and protons are made from smaller particles.

“Sun and the Moon, each floating in its orbit.} (Quran 21:33)”

Yet more evidence this book is not from a supernatural source. No, the sun does not “orbit” which means to go around something.

The rest can be found online fully debunked.

      SUN do revolves around !!
Not around the earth but floating in its own orbit . whole solar systems orbits around center of milky way galaxy . And if you go further even galaxies are floating in its own orbit.

You need to read QURAN with a respect and +ve attitude .

“Every thing created by water” here means life is not possible ( i.e. to survive and to originate) without water (at least on earth, if you argue) which is true.

Don’t talk childish like about molecules, (hydrogen?oxygen?), there r millions of “matter” made of hydrogen and oxygen but it is the form of it (water) which is being talked about and responsible for life.

And that is the reason, water is the first thing searched on any planet being studied by scientists!!

        • Aisha, take this from an older person…. believe, just believe in something, I get the feeling you are young (under 25) and you are looking for reason to discredit what you now feel was forced upon you. Sure, water is made of smaller parts, but so are bricks, yet I still say my home is made of Bricks, I don’t break it down further than that…. what would be the point….. You hold “Truth” above the Quran? what is truth? According to Hilary Clinton the truth was there was no way she could lose to Donald Trump based on the stats and polls her team were using. The truth 10 yrs ago was that all saturated fat was bad for you, now we are understanding we can’t live without it….. so the “truth” dear Aisha is still subjective, nothing is 100% and nothing concrete, there is alot of Grey and whether you are a Jew, Christian or a Muslim, all of these books tell us we need to have faith, we need to believe even when we are being told we cannot…. you can question, just make sure you understand who or what is steering the outcomes…. good luck in finding your truth.

          • Believe? Believe in something? Hitler believed. Are you saying that his belief is just as valid? Or is it “what” you believe that should hold a measure of truth before believing? Are you now going to bring up faith as a valid source to override truth? The fact still boils down to this: there is no evidence for a god/gods. None. If you wish to believe without evidence than it is subjective belief and is no good for finding the truth. Religious belief, any religious belief, is only subjective and has never been proven with evidence. Just because YOU believe there to be a god does not make it true and if you use “faith” to choose Islam, than another individual is just as able to choose Christianity by faith. Or Hinduism by faith. Faith is not a adequate means for knowing truth. Walk through a psyc ward if you think it is.

No one said that the Quran discovered these scientific facts, some of them were known. Some of them. Not all. The astonishing part is that many of the Greeks made statements that were wrong. Yet this man, Muhammad (pbuh), coincidentally left those mistakes out and only included the truth. Does that make sense? How did he know? Was he a scientist? You can’t point to me (nor can anyone) a single verse in the Quran that is against established science. Not one. Its a challenge. Oh and please don’t Google, take the time to study it.

Muslims however knows that Islam have existed since the beginning of time with the first man on earth, Adam a.s., entasked as the first prophet to start spreading the religion.

This is why people like Aisha here would think that Islam has only been recently created when actually, it’s been around since the beginning of time! And Every Muslim knows that

How old is the discory that the earth did not have iron and how old is the Quran?

          Reply
          • That’s interesting. The Earth did not have iron? Now who’s being ignorant? Iron has been an integral part of the Earth since the Earth’s inception. Granted, some iron (a relatively small part) has come from meteorite impact but most iron on Earth began with the Earth. In fact, current science indicates that the Earth’s core is mostly molten iron. Our own body chemistry would not work without iron. There are other inconsistencies that I won’t go into but what concerns me more than anything else about the arguments I’ve heard in these comments is the underlying theme from Muslims that non-Muslims are somehow inferior, lost or less than Muslims. The implicit idea that non-Muslims must be destroyed, will be cast into hell, have their skins burned away by the fires then replaced so they can continue to suffer eternally is, quite frankly, despicable and quite contrary to the idea of a merciful God. That’s not mercy or kindness or forgiveness. That’s unbridled savagery, and purely evil in its inception. The ultimate hypocrisy of the religion. Religion…all religion…is a man-made construct built to control and manipulate. There is truth and beauty in the Universe that each person will eventually come to. Islam, like other religions, steers the closed mind away from that truth…and yes, devout Muslims do indeed have closed minds just as devout Christians, Jews etc. do. Belief in anything outside of their rigid structure is forbidden. So it has always been. Islam, contrary to what a few here have implied, did not start with the first human. The first tangible evidence of the presence of Islam places its origins around 610AD. Trying to claim it any earlier is demonstrably false as no empirical evidence for it exists prior to the appearance of the Quran. True spirituality (and wisdom) does not reside in a book or a structured belief system. God neither needs nor requires our worship. That is not why creation exists nor is it why we are here. Truth does not require your belief or your obedience. Sooner or later you will come to realize this…though I highly doubt you will believe me or even consider my words. Such is the nature of a closed mind. However; unlike your religion, I do not condemn you for your beliefs. I do not tell you you are wrong unless you say things that are provably wrong…like the Earth did not have iron. It is you and your faith that condemn me and tell me I’m wrong even though you can’t prove a word of what you believe. Believing in something you can’t prove is the nature of faith. You are welcome to your faith until your faith interferes with my life. That’s where I draw the line.

If English is your primary language then you should return to school and learn how to write. Words in the hands of a master can be a powerful tool indeed…but in the hands of an idiot they serve no purpose and are generally dismissed out of hand. No one will take you seriously when you put out nonsensical dribble like this. Calling someone “stupid” while illuminating your own ignorance won’t make your point. Punctuation and grammar serve a purpose! Even if English is not your first language, it only makes sense to learn how to write it before trying to convey thoughts through the written word. Who’s really wandering in the dark?

Your religion, along with all religions, are a bunch of myths until you can provide evidence for your god even being real and then you’d still need to show how your religion helps the world. Frankly, what it’s always shown is that it causes more damage than good.

Its is finally we call it water, the water you drink when thirsty, when you wash when you’re dirty, when the rains pour down from clouds as Mercy from Allah towards earth is water. So water is not called oxygen, hydrogen, molecules, atoms etc etc but is called water.
And yes there is oxygen present in water and you know why because there are thousands of species of water which requires a bit of oxygen to survive that too in the form of water.

water contains O2, C and H. You can imagine these molecules in all living things( Plants, animals, microbes…) not everything.

What Thales mentioned is that everything originated from water and that water is the origin of everything.

If you believe that this what this verse is conveying, then you have no idea what you are talking about.

This verse states that every “living” thing, is in fact, made living by water.

Can you argue that kingdom animalia and kingdom plantae can both live without water?

      Nope. Sorry. You can’t.

Can you claim there are other creatures that live without water?

      Nope. You can’t.

You are just a troll, my dear lady.

Are you aware that the above mentioned so called miracles have been debunked?

Living beings made from water -Firstly, every living thing is not made from water. Every life form requires water to function. Something the Quran failed to mention. if it really was from God it would have told you something down this line. “Every life form requires water to function”.  then you could consider it to be a scientific miracle.
You cannot make a “living thing” from water. You cannot make an elephant from water, a bee or a bird.  It is insane to claim that living things are made from water as the Quran claims. Just ask yourself this question and ponder on it. What can you make from a glass of water? Well, apart from freezing it or boiling it to make it evaporate. There really isn’t much you can do with water alone.

Since Allah, just claimed that he created every living thing from water, you would also have expected him to say that he created humans from water since they too are “living things”.
In this verse Allah is contradicting himself saying that he created humans from clay. Are humans not “living things”?
“Your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being out of clay. When I have formed him and breathed My Spirit into him, fall down in prostration to him!” (Qur’an, 38:71-72)

This time, Allah did not use water to create a “living thing” but clay, even though he told you that he creates every living thing from water.
Consider this. If the Quran really did have any scientific miracles, why did nobody have a clue about the so called scientific miracles until science made the discovery? After science makes discoveries, Islam will quickly jump in and then say, “oh btw, my holy book already said that!”.  Well if your holy book already said that, how come nobody knew for centuries until science had to make the discovery.
A book that claims the earth is flat just cannot even be considered to be scientific. It defies logic and science on countless of occasions.

Iron send from Heaven – The ‘iron sent down from heaven’ proposition is not distinct to Islam nor was the Islamic version the earliest. The ancient Egyptians referred to iron as ‘iron from heaven’.Thus the concept of iron from outer space/heaven/sky was already known to humanity thousands of years before Islam.

Mountains as pegs and they protect the earth from earthquakes?? go study geology please and you’ll know the number of earthquakes that takes place around the mountains

Pain receptor – now why do you have to call this a miracle? this is really embarrassing now..even people who lived 10000 years know it feels pain when the skin is Damaged or struck….. Does the quran say pain comes from under the skin? lol stop embarrassing the other Muslims.

Sky a Ceiling -This seems to relate to the verses about devils chased by lamps (meteors) in the lowest heaven (see above). Somewhat ironically, the things supposedly doing the guarding (meteors) can actually pose a threat to living things on Earth.

Asteroids and meteorites have penetrated the atmosphere and hit the earth throughout the course of history. This includes the massive meteorite that hit near the Yucatán Peninsula 65 million years which killed off numerous species including most dinosaurs. There is no guardian, whatsoever, that prevents these types of events from happening.

The Qur’an author thought that the sky is like a ceiling that can fall on someone while the earth can swallow someone too. This is obviously impossible as the earth’s atmosphere is simply made of gas.

See they not what is before them and behind them, of the sky and the earth? If We wished, We could cause the earth to swallow them up, or cause a piece of the sky to fall upon them. Verily in this is a Sign for every devotee that turns to Allah (in repentance).

@ TheDarkKnight, ill address 2 points of ur reply .

1- Dr. Zaker give an example for the mountains argument that most the earthquakes occur there “They Said: Hospital are for curing the illness . don’t u know how many ill people are in hospitals ” .

2- Sky in Quran some times has the meaning of the normal sky. and other times has the meaning of the universe “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.” 51:47.

      – I might not agree with theArticle about the Iron thing . not because that Iron is not from the space, but because the word ( أنزلنا ( might means : create . and not bringing from the sky.

In 1898, the mummified body of Merneptah was found in the valley of Kings in Egypt. In 1975, Dr. Maurice Bucaille with other doctors received permission to examine the Mummy of Merneptah, the findings of which proved that Merneptah probably died from drowning or a violent shock which immediately preceeded the moment of drowning.
who is able to predict that a body of 1600 years ago is preserved and will appear in the futur (1400 year after ) quran 10:92

Being a Muslim I read Holy Koran and time and often I try to perceive its deep rooted meanings from the pages of the most exhaustive narration (Tafsir) of the verses of the Holy Book for us to study and live in accordance.
Easy explanations on the findings of extensive research of the Koran from your learned bench will help cement further the necessary learning for the believers. Yes, for the believers as you and me. I pray, let the All-wise Allah Malik enlighten you with more light to eradicate darkness.
Yes, there were lives (gumrah) who disowned the divine verses, disowned the greatest Prophet! These wretched lives will be dealt accordingly on the day of resurrection. That very day every doors of forgiveness will be closed, never to be reopened.
    Thank you so much.

The notion that everyone has when they found the scientific fact in the Quran that Islam is just started 1400 yes ago when God send down His Message to the Prophet Muhammad is just totally false. God has sent the same message to previous prophets in chains from Noah down to Jesus. So whatever scientific fact that now discover in the Quran could possibly already discovered thousands year before the time of the Seal of Prophet Muhammad as the source is the same.

  • Okay, here’s what I think.. When Inread a verse like “و جعلنا من الماء كل شئ حي” which traslates to “we made every living thing from water”, I just ponder it for a moment, think ” yes, living things need water to live, and they can’t live without it. Subhan allah.” END. OF. STORY. I am not thst insecure about my religion as to try and find an earthly proof or validation for every single verse! I just ponder about it philosophically and METAPHORICALLY. I take the “moral of the story”, not the literal meaning! If that were the case, then I’d definitely leave Islam, because science, unlike the Quran, is changing everyday. If we try to prove an unchanging text with changing facts, we’d have a clear ” loser”. The quran, in my opinion, is NOT a science book. It is intended to make muslims find grace and beauty in everything we lay our eyes upon. Why do muslims do that? What are they (we) trying to prove? Don’t we already believe in the quran wholeheartedly? Astaghfirullah if I’m wrong, but I think that these adamant attempts actually take away from the beauty, grace, and lenience of Islam. assalamu alaikum….

If you believe yourself to be truly intelligent than you will know this to be true and stop the jihad before it is to late for you and your family/culture. Your belief does not allow you to have courage to think for yourself. You are like children being told what to do.

  • This article is completely WRONG about iron, and hence the koran is too.

The earth’s core is primarily iron-nickel alloy. The earth contains HUGE amounts of iron, and this iron has been there since the planet formed. It did originally come from exploded stars, as did most heavier elements within the earth. But if you’re going to argue that makes the koran right, then why does it not mention the same for copper, silver, gold, etc. all of which were also created in exploding stars and were present as the earth formed? Why single iron out?

The reason of course is that iron does also occasionally fall from the sky in meteorites. This has been known for centuries, indeed the ancient egyptians prized iron meteorites highly – they recognized the strength and hardness of iron, and had no way to produce it – they did not have the knowledge or technology to find iron ore in the earth’s crust and smelt it into metal.

Far from demonstrating the koran having modern knowledge before science, the koran apparently just demonstrates the lack of knowledge about where iron exists of the people at that time, who apparently believed it all came from meteorites, which in fact represents only a tiny fraction of a percent of the iron within the earth.

  • We will see what we want to see. Like the prophesies of Nostradamus, we can fit words to mean anything we want. All of a sudden, a book of words becomes miraculous. I won’t say what’s in the Koran is wrong or right. You can’t either. You can only state what you believe. That’s why it’s called “faith.” If you have an open mind, you will recognize that the statements being argued here are open to interpretation. Those who believe in Islam will see miracles. Those who don’t believe will not. They will look at their religious book(s) and see their own miracles. Religion…all religion…is a man-made construct that came about primarily to control and manipulate people, sometimes for their benefit, sometimes not. Devout believers, be they Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu etc. tend to have very closed minds. Weak minds are easily led and strict adherence to religious edict is designed to discourage critical, inquisitive thinking…leading to weaker, dogmatic minds. Evil often uses religion for it’s own purpose. Divergence outside of a specific train of thought is not permitted. Believers are taught that those not of the faith (whatever faith that may be) are to be considered lost, ignorant, blasphemous, unworthy etc. That leads to other issues. Belittling the “unbelievers” becomes self-serving of the core religion. It then becomes ok to discriminate…or worse. The divisiveness, the seeds of hatred and intolerance are apparent even in this message string. We see the end result of such thinking playing out across the world today. I don’t think this is what a merciful, loving God had in mind.
