Child Marriage is permitted in Islam but Not Encouraged (Part 1)

In the Muslim society the trend is to marry after attaining puberty and child marriage is not preferred. In the Quran (4:6), almighty Allah instructs to substantiate the strength of orphans while handing over their assets (inherited) to them in case they reach the age of marriage.

Prove orphans till they reach the marriageable age; then, if you find them of sound judgment, deliver over unto them their fortune” (Quran 4:6)

Here reaching the age of marriage is after attaining puberty. Moreover, Islam permits both boys and girls to agree or disagree with a marriage proposal. After attaining puberty only, a person can decide what is good or bad for oneself. Hence, it more appropriate to arrange the marriage of adults but not the children.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) arranged the marriage of his four daughters only after they reached puberty. Hence, it can be inferred that this is the only proper approach. However, Islam keeps a column open for the child marriage, if the situation arises.
