Muslim Student Labeled ISIS in School Yearbook

A Muslim highschool student in California is extremely upset after discovering that she was labeled “Isis” in her yearbook, the acronym used to refer to the extreme Middle East group.

I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed that the Los Osos High School yearbook was able to get away with this. Apparently I am “Isis” in the yearbook,” Bayan Zehlif wrote on Facebook on May 6.

“The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let’s be real.”

The incident came to light after Zehlif, a student at Los Osos high school in Rancho Cucamonga, California, tweeted a photo of a page in her yearbook.

The page contained her class photo with the name “Isis Phillips” underneath.

The tweet sparked outrage, with many encouraging their fellow student to report the incident.

Zehlif replied noting that her mother plans to meet with Susan Petrocelli, the principal at Los Osos, and intends to “open a case” if no answers are given.

Petrocelli said she has convened an investigation into the matter to determine how “Isis Phillips” appeared under Zehlif’s photo, The Islamic Monthly reported.

“LOHS is taking every step possible to correct & investigate a regrettable misprint discovered in the yearbook. We sincerely apologize,” she tweeted.

“I would never say it was a typo or a mistake. As I told Bayan’s family, this matter has to be thoroughly investigated first,” she told the Islamic Monthly.

The principal stated that only 287 yearbooks have been distributed so far at the school attended by 3,000 students.

The rest of the yearbooks are currently locked up and school officials are working with the publisher to correct the error.
