Question
1. Are two or four rakats for Ishraq substantiated from Hadith?
2. Regarding the rewards mentioned for Ishraq, it’s usually stated that for two rakats, one gets Nafl Hajj & Umrah reward &, for a second two rakats, one’s daily needs are fulfilled. Is this found in Hadith?
Answer
1) Sayyiduna Anas Ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
‘Whoever offers his Fajr salah in congregation, and then remains seated remembering Allah until after sunrise, and then he offers two rakats of salah (Ishraq), will receive the reward of one complete Haj and one complete ‘Umrah’
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) repeated the word ‘complete’ thrice.
(Sunan Tirmidhi, hadith:586 with a sound chain)
2) Sayyiduna ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir Al Juhani (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
Verily Allah Ta’ala says: ‘ O Son of Adam, suffice me [by offering] four rakats of salah at the beginning of the day, I will suffice for you [your needs] till the end of the day in exchange of those four rakats’
(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 153 and Musnad Abu Ya’la, Hadith: 1757)
Hafiz Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has authenticated the above narration. Similar narrations have also been reported via other Sahabah.
(Refer: Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 464)
If a person offers two rakats only, he will get the reward promised in the first Hadith, and if he merely adds two more rakats he will insha Allah, get the reward promised in the second narration as well.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
